Why is something\u00a0sweeter when you have to sneak it?<\/p>\n
Like an office liaison, my dates with writing are when no one is looking. \u00a0I write in between doing real work, and I write at home between gaming times.<\/p>\n
But why is it, when I get the nod that it’s okay to write, the muse runs away?<\/p>\n
I have trained myself all these years to sneak. \u00a0I first started writing during school, when I was supposed to be taking notes from the teacher. \u00a0I wrote stories. \u00a0In college, sometimes, if the subject was boring, I did the same thing. \u00a0I wrote when the urge struck me, except during a five-year dry spell. \u00a0Then I picked it up with a vengeance and have been trying to write more often. \u00a0Since last October, I’ve been trying to write daily.<\/p>\n
I’ve been sneaking writing at work since 2007, when I started here. \u00a0Short stories, scenes, that kind of thing. \u00a0Not novels. \u00a0Novels are too big. \u00a0Too unwieldy, especially when I have to use my head for some things.<\/p>\n
I was out on leave and wrote Grimaulkin’sfirst draft\u00a0in a month. \u00a0Pantsed it before I knew what Pantsing was. \u00a0It’s how I wrote all my novels, so I never thought that it was “bad”. \u00a0(According to Writer’s Digest, it is.)<\/p>\n
Came back, and the writing dried up to daily stories for the game. \u00a0So it is now.<\/p>\n
Although I’ve been writing Tamerlane these last few days, and a bit of Grimaulkin. \u00a0But today, nobody’s around, and those who are around don’t care. \u00a0So…why can’t I write?<\/p>\n
Because the muses know that they can’t whisper in my ear during the hectic moments of the day. \u00a0They know that I am receptive, able to listen.<\/p>\n
They’re not trained for that.<\/p>\n
They’re trained to drop little things, hints. \u00a0Teasers. \u00a0In the back of my mind, they’re working on the full story.<\/p>\n
Like I got to a point with Tamerlane last night, and thought, “Oh…OH! \u00a0I know where you’re going with this! \u00a0But will the reader know after I dropped this hint?”<\/p>\n
So I have an idea consciously of where we’re going, but will I end up there?<\/p>\n
