{"id":125,"date":"2014-09-20T10:50:00","date_gmt":"2014-09-20T14:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/grimaulkin.com\/ljacob-today\/?p=125"},"modified":"2014-09-20T10:50:00","modified_gmt":"2014-09-20T14:50:00","slug":"ya-trends-so-i-see","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/grimaulkin.com\/ljacob-today\/?p=125","title":{"rendered":"YA trends (so I see)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Benet. \u00a0His name is Benet.<\/p>\n<p>That out of the way, I did a little perusal of the YA stacks in my local independent bookstore.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most of\u00a0the writers seem to be in their 20&#8217;s.<\/li>\n<li>They&#8217;re mostly women.<\/li>\n<li>They write about girls being outcasts and their boyfriends being outcasts too.<\/li>\n<li>The packaging on these books are beautiful and thoughtful.<\/li>\n<li>They&#8217;re trade paperback for first novels, hardcover if they&#8217;re in a series.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I picked up one book that just looked really good to me, one book that is similar to what I&#8217;m writing (by Sherilyn Kenyon, who Jake Logan would be right next to), and another about Grim in his later years. \u00a0I also got Writer&#8217;s Digest, Poets and Writers.<\/p>\n<p>There was one book there that amazed me. \u00a0It was a pink hardcover and had a Satanic symbol on it. \u00a0It caught my eye in its simplicity, and though I probably wouldn&#8217;t have read the story, I decided I wanted a cover like that &#8211; but in purple. \u00a0Or rainbow. \u00a0(Ha!)<\/p>\n<p>The difference between YA and paranormal adult is the age of the protagonist. \u00a0That&#8217;s it. \u00a0The 16 year olds get into just as much mature trouble as the 30 year olds.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to write Grim in 1997 (He would have been born in 1972 or 3). \u00a0As long as I place him in some sort of modern time, I think he will be timeless.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Benet. \u00a0His name is Benet.
